10 Things I Want To Do Better In 2021

2021 is the year we all waited for with eager anticipation, in the hopes we were leaving the shitshow of 2020 behind us. Except that’s not really been the case. So far, 2021 has brought much of the same, including lockdown, just with poorer weather. Despite this, I’m looking at 2021 as a year for development (something I briefly talked about in last week’s YouTube video). So, here’s 10 things I want to do better in 2021.

10 Things To Do Better In 2021

Despite being locked down by myself for the first half of 2020 (yey for living alone), I found myself actually distancing myself from family and friends. Working from home, with a smaller workforce, during year-end accounts was exhausting… leaving little desire to be social once I clocked off for the day. So, with a new job in August and, for the most part, a better work/life balance, I really want to be better at keeping in touch with my loved ones.

I must admit, I spent a LOT of last year essentially wasting my free time. Hours spent just sitting in front of the TV, but not really watching it; scrolling pointlessly through social media; or even just sitting doing absolutely nothing. I got so overwhelmed with everything that was going on, I had little interest in anything else. When I look back on 2020, I didn’t really achieve anything in comparison to what I hoped I would, so I definitely want to change that this year.

While we might still be in lockdown, hopefully we won’t be for much longer. One thing it’s made me realise is that I don’t want to take the freedom to get out and explore for granted ever again. I love travel and I love photography, so why would I waste the opportunities I’m given to partake in both of those? Especially after being cooped up for almost a year. While jetting off abroad won’t be on the cards for this year, I’ll be thankful even just getting out and exploring areas local to me.

I’m not going to lie, home workouts and outdoor running are just NOT my thing. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when gyms closed. Though I was reluctant to go once they opened back up due to the increased risk. That means I’ve spent the last year being inactive, other than the occasional walk – and boy, do my scales know it. So, this year, I want to be much more active, both for the mental and physical benefits, and, hopefully, get back to the gym later in the year.

I went into 2020 being quite consistent with blogging… until I started working from home. My office, before then, was solely for blogging and then it became my actual office. It meant that, by the end of the work day, it wasn’t somewhere I wanted to be. I, therefore, created a new area but I just wasn’t as inspired as I had been in my office. However, this year, I made a new blogging corner; I bought new fairy lights, made it cosy and somewhere I really wanted to spend time. I think I’ve actually spent more time there than my own living room. So, watch this space.

Despite everything that happened in 2020, there are a few things I decided I could do better coming into 2021. What're your plans for 2021?

Like with blogging, I also fell out of love with the other things I enjoy; reading, cross-stitch, photography, to name a few. At the end of the day, these are the things that make me happy and that’s definitely what we need more of this year, especially with the way it’s started out.

Sustainability is super important if we don’t want to negatively impact the lives of future generations. There are many things we can do to live sustainably; some of which I’ve been doing for a number of years. However, there are definitely more things I could be doing and it’s something I would like to make a conscious effort with moving forward.

After making a considerable effort to become financially stable last year, it’s something I obviously want to continue with. So, my goal for myself this year is to be more savvy with my money. That means spending less money on takeaways (hooray for fakeaways, right?!), and other unnecessary items, and putting that money into my savings & ISA instead.

There are many ways to describe mindfulness, but essentially it is the practice of being in the present moment, aware of where you are, what you’re doing and not becoming overwhelmed by what’s going on around you. It can help you become calmer, more grounded and is an invaluable tool for dealing with all kinds of challenges. Mindfulness is something I already do to some degree, but it’s definitely something I could be more active with. I also think it’ll help me slow down and just take a moment.

We’re all creatures of habit… sometimes not all good. I’m certainly guilty go missing breakfast, staying up until the early hours and choosing fizzy drinks over water. Working from home has definitely ruined me for those. So, this year I’ve promise myself I will be better. I’ve bought breakfast bars and yoghurt drinks. I’ve start drinking waaaay more water, thanks to my filtered jug in the fridge. So now all that’s left to improve is my sleeping routine.

So, that’s my 10 things to do better in 2021. I’ll check in later in the year to let you guys know how I got on with these.

Have you thought about what you might want to achieve this year? I’d love to hear them!

Here’s to 2021,
